  • UGANDA NYABUBARE - YEAST WASHED

extended story

Nestled in the Kigezi Highlands of western Uganda, the Nyabubare Coffee Washing Station sits among rolling hills, rich volcanic soils, and a climate ideal for producing exceptional Arabica coffee. The surrounding landscape provides the high elevation and cool conditions needed for slow cherry maturation, allowing complex sugars and fruit characteristics to develop. This region has become one of Uganda’s most promising coffee-growing areas, where generations of farmers continue to elevate the country's reputation in specialty coffee.

Nyabubare works with hundreds of smallholder farmers who carefully cultivate and harvest their coffee on small family farms throughout the region. Their commitment to quality begins with selective cherry picking and continues through a unique yeast inoculation washed process. During fermentation, a selected yeast strain is introduced to guide the breakdown of sugars, creating greater consistency and unlocking distinctive layers of fruit complexity while maintaining the clarity of a washed coffee.

This combination of skilled farming, innovative processing, and the exceptional environment of western Uganda results in a cup that is both expressive and balanced. Vibrant blackberry and pomegranate notes shine with wine-like sweetness, while a rich cocoa finish provides structure and familiarity. Nyabubare represents a new chapter in Ugandan coffee, where innovation is helping producers showcase the remarkable potential of their land and communities.
