about the coffee

In Rwanda’s Nyamasheke District, along the edge of the biodiverse Nyungwe Forest, Gatare Washing Station has helped shape the country’s reputation for exceptional coffee since its founding in 2003. Sitting between 1,800 and 2,050 meters, the surrounding hills provide ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation, allowing sugars and acids to develop with precision. This high elevation, paired with Rwanda’s steady climate, creates coffees known for their clarity and vibrant structure.

about the process

Gatare works with a network of smallholder farmers who cultivate primarily Red Bourbon, a variety well suited to the region. Farmers deliver freshly picked cherries to the station, where careful sorting and washed processing highlight the coffee’s natural brightness and balance. Gatare has long been recognized for setting quality standards in Rwanda, consistently producing coffees that stand out in competitions like the Cup of Excellence
