Papua New Guinea
Barodia Estate

The story of Papua New Guinea Baroida Estate is one of resilience, innovation, and a deep connection to the land. The journey began in 1963 when Ben Colbran, a pioneer in the coffee industry, moved from New Zealand to the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea with his family. Seeking to establish a successful agricultural venture, Ben purchased 600 acres of land in the Kainantu District and quickly realized the region's potential for coffee cultivation.

Initially, Ben cultivated vegetables and fruits to generate income, which allowed him to invest in a sawmill and eventually fulfill his dream of growing coffee. Over time, Colbran Coffeelands became one of the most notable coffee estates in Papua New Guinea, thanks to Ben's dedication to quality and his innovative approach to overcoming the challenges of coffee farming in the wet highlands.

The Baroida Estate, named after a local spirit believed to reside in a large, immovable river rock on the farm, is now managed by Ben’s son, Nichol Colbran. Nichol, who has lived on the estate since he was six, continues the family tradition of excellence. Under his leadership, Baroida Estate has grown to encompass 220 hectares of mature coffee trees, surrounded by smallholder farms that benefit from Nichol’s expertise and support.

The Colbran family’s commitment to sustainable farming practices is evident in their meticulous approach to cultivation and processing. They have adapted planting techniques to suit the region's high rainfall, implemented drainage systems to prevent waterlogging, and introduced shade trees to reduce fertilizer use. These efforts, combined with a deep understanding of the land and its needs, have resulted in a coffee that is both high in quality and rich in flavor.

Harvesting at Baroida Estate is done with great care, ensuring that only the ripest cherries are selected. The coffee undergoes a natural processing method, where the cherries are dried on raised beds, allowing the flavors to develop fully. The result is a coffee that captures the essence of the Eastern Highlands, offering a unique and unforgettable taste experience. This coffee is a testament to the Colbran family's enduring legacy and unwavering commitment to producing exceptional coffee that reflects the unique characteristics of its origin.
