extended story

In the remote highlands of Quiché, Guatemala, the members of ECA Flor de Maíz have built more than a coffee cooperative, they have created a foundation for their community. Founded in 2002 by Maya Ixil farming families, the cooperative was established to give producers access to land, financial opportunity, and a stronger future through coffee. Since then, members have invested not only in quality coffee production but also in schools, community housing, and infrastructure that benefits generations to come.

This coffee is grown at approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, where cool mountain temperatures encourage slow cherry development. Producers selectively handpick ripe cherries, ferment the coffee for about 24 hours, then fully wash and carefully sun dry it before delivering parchment to the cooperative's collection center. This collaborative approach allows each producer to maintain careful attention to quality while benefiting from shared resources and market access.

Every cup reflects the cooperative's commitment to stewardship, sustainability, and community. Through organic farming, watershed protection, and continued investment in their people, Flor de Maíz demonstrates how great coffee can strengthen both the land and the families who call it home.
